The episode aired on Tuesday 30th July 2013. The greenhouse being a feature in the makeover of the Nixons’ garden, in Hereford. Two and a half years ago Rhyanne Nixon was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. MND has rapidly taken hold of Rhyanne, during this time the Nixon family have moved to a bungalow specially adapted for Rhyanne who is now confined to a wheelchair and requires round-the-clock care. Mike, Rhyanne’s husband, is a keen gardener but as Rhyanne’s illness has progressed the garden has become inaccessible to her as the family’s time and money has gone into adapting the house.
Rhyanne and family were nominated by her mum, Annie Carrit, who saw the need for the family garden to be made over and become accessible for her daughter, allowing her to spend time enjoying the garden with her husband and youngest son.
Additionally, the Nixon family were supplied with optional extras: double sided staging, guttering which includes two water butts, and two roof ventilation windows with temperature sensitive auto-openers.
The Greenhouse features 4mm toughened glass. We use 4mm thick toughened glass, not Perspex or Styrene which can scratch easily and cloud up over time. This is also thicker and less likely to break when hit with the neighbour’s pesky football compared to the industry standard of 3mm horticultural glass.
