Rabbitopia SkyDen – learn more!

Rabbitopia

Autumn is draping its chilly fingers over Britain. Now is the time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves, who don’t have the luxury of central heating and hot water-bottles. I am, of course, talking about your pet bunny rabbits!

In their wild state, bunnies live in underground burrows which remain at largely the same temperature in all weathers. When they live in a typical hutch and run, they are exposed to extremes of temperatures which they cannot naturally cope with. Our Rabbitopias have an innovative “vertical burrow” which endeavors to replicate the constant temperature of a wild burrow. (Check out our previous blog Let’s break down the Rabbitopia to find out the benefits of all the different parts.) This is called the SkyBurrow, and at its apex is the cosy SkyDen. Today we’ll explain why the SkyDen is such an essential feature in the stunning Rabbitopia.

The walls and ceiling of the SkyDen are made from 12.5mm thick timbers with 25mm insulation in between. The insulation material is polyurethane. This is lightweight and its insulating properties are so superior that it has been used by NASA to insulate their fuel tanks. It keeps the den warm in the winter and contributes to keeping it cool in the summer so that your rabbits have somewhere to retreat to if the weather starts to overwhelm them.

Another contributing factor to the warmth of the SkyDen is that the rabbit’s small entrance hole is from underneath, since it is a vertical burrow, meaning that the heat inside the SkyDen doesn’t easily dissipate like it would do if there was a hole in the front or sides. So whether it’s frosty and cold or whether they’ve just been caught in the rain, your rabbits can cuddle together in the warmest part of their burrow and be happy and safe.

Another advantage to the SkyDen and indeed the whole Rabbitopia is that unlike a lot of rabbit housing products on the market the timber is pressure treated. This means that treatment has been forced into the timber at high pressure. Our timber is also cut before it is treated, so that all exposed areas of timber are treated. If it was cut afterwards, the bare ends would need treated separately. This treatment, also known as Tanalith-E, guarantees you 10 years without rot, wood-destroying fungus or insect infestations in your timber as long as you keep the timber above the ground and not in standing water. Tanalith-E is non-toxic and arsenic free, so you don’t have to worry about your bunnies if they chew at it. We also use spruce, a denser, harder wood than commonly used pine, so that your rabbits don’t bite off more than they can chew!

Even though the SkyDen is completely enclosed and insulated, you can still access it to clean it or to retrieve a stubborn bunny, since it has a simple double-handled door which is easy to remove. Your bunnies are also not out of sight the entire time they are in their burrow, as the SkyBurrow leading upwards is open on one side. Rabbits like to sit on these slightly lower levels and watch the word go by, so you can still have plenty of interaction with your rabbits even in inclement weather.
